Motor Cuts Out or Stops

Symptoms:

it works and then stops working

Solutions from the community:

Sounds like some trouble shooting is in order. If it works and then stops working it may be an intermittent connection somewhere. The next time the motor stops, keep the key turned on and then also turn on your headlights.

If the headlights don’t turn
on it most likely is something between the following:
  1. Battery pack
  2. Cable from the battery pack to the motor controller
  3. Key switch
  4. Loose connection of wire / connector for any of the above.

Follow the power cable from the battery to the motor controller. There are two connectors on this cable – one at each end. One is at the battery and the other one is at the motor controller. Make sure that they are connected firmly at both ends and that the wires are not loose. You can tug on the wires to make sure.

If the lights turn on but the motor does not run, I would check the following:
  1. Throttle switch
  2. Cable / connectors from the throttle switch to the motor controller
  3. Cable / connector from the motor controller to the motor

Follow the cable from the hand throttle to the motor controller. There is a three pin connector under the handle bar. Make sure that this is connected and the wires are not loose. Follow this cable to the motor controller. Make sure that the connection to the motor controller is not loose. To check the cable from the motor controller to the motor is a bit more difficult since it is under the ELF. Again, verify that this cable is seated properly and the wires are not loose.

If it is not any of the above, then the next step would be to take some voltage measurements with a Voltmeter. The first test would be to check the battery voltage. With the battery fully charged it should be around 54V. To check the rest of the wiring will probably require a tech if you don’t feel comfortable doing this.

The above information (especially the references to the connectors) are based on the wiring for my ELF. Your ELF may be wired differently. [source: Greg Parkhurst]
